Each school season we create a 10 week curriculum for students in our after school program, The Emphasis Project. Over the course of the program students learn the inner workings of the field of production. Students are task with producing a photo shoot from conception to fruition throughout the course of the program.
Each student is assigned a role and must learn the responsibilities of the role as it pertains to the project. This gives students a sense of accountability to their fellow classmates. This is important for the students interpersonal skills in the real world and in production because it takes teamwork to produce quality work. The goal is to expose students to the different career paths that are available to them in areas they may be unknown possibilities for them.
This year the student chose "Black Excellence" as the concept for their photo shoot. They selected five individuals that exemplify black excellence in their eyes. These individuals were : Barack Obama, Michelle Obama, Jackie Robinson, Katherine Johnson and Chance The Rapper. The slideshow that you see is the product of the students creativity come to life. Check out the photos and also our Youtube page for other videos on the The Emphasis Project.
We need your support to help provide quality programs to teens in the Chicago area as we develop innovative ways to connect the arts to business. Our afterschool programs provide teens a safe environment to express their frustrations, dreams and thoughts about the world through the creative arts. Your donation would help NLS Creators fund field trip and events for teens in our program.
Our field trips are multimedia experiences that allow students to learn through interacting with the real world of production. We took a group of students on a tour of NBC in downtown Chicago and they were able to see behind the scenes of the whole production process. One student expressed interest in becoming a director afer hearing there are few female directors in the field. Another student was inspired by the technological aspect fo the field trip and expressed interest in becoming a broadcasting technician.
Our goal is to motivate the next generation of creative entrepreneurs. Without your help this can not be possible. On behalf of all of our NLS Creators, our teens and staff we thank you very much for your support.
